What is the difference between binary and decimal?

Binary uses powers of 1024 (1 KB = 1024 B), which is how operating systems measure memory. Decimal uses powers of 1000 (1 KB = 1000 B), which is how storage manufacturers label drives.

Why does my 1 TB hard drive show less than 1 TB?

Manufacturers use decimal (1 TB = 1,000,000,000,000 B), but Windows uses binary (1 TiB = 1,099,511,627,776 B). That is why a 1 TB drive shows as about 931 GiB in Windows.
