About Wind Chill Calculator FAQ

What is wind chill?

Wind chill is the perceived decrease in air temperature felt by the body on exposed skin due to the flow of air. Higher wind speeds make the air feel colder than the actual thermometer reading.

How accurate is this calculator?

This calculator uses the official wind chill formulas adopted by the US National Weather Service and Environment Canada. It is accurate for temperatures at or below 10°C (50°F) and wind speeds above 4.8 km/h (3 mph).

At what wind chill does frostbite occur?

Frostbite can occur when wind chill drops below -25°C (-13°F). At -40°C (-40°F), frostbite can happen in just 10 minutes on exposed skin.

Does wind chill affect objects or only people?

Wind chill only affects living things with skin. Inanimate objects like cars or water pipes cool to the actual air temperature, not the wind chill temperature.
