О Blood Type Inheritance

Blood type is determined by genes inherited from both parents. The ABO system has three alleles: A, B, and O. A and B are dominant over O, but are codominant with each other (resulting in AB). The Rh factor is determined by a separate gene, where positive (D) is dominant over negative (d).

Frequently Asked Questions

Can two O parents have a child with type A or B?

No. Two O parents can only have a child with type O blood, because the O allele is recessive and both parents can only pass on O alleles.

Can two Rh-negative parents have an Rh-positive child?

No. Rh-negative means both alleles are negative (dd), so both parents can only pass on negative alleles. The child will always be Rh-negative.

Is blood type prediction 100% accurate?

This calculator provides probabilities based on standard Mendelian inheritance. In rare cases, mutations or other genetic factors may result in unexpected blood types. For definitive results, genetic testing is required.

What is the rarest blood type?

The rarest ABO-Rh combination is AB-negative, found in less than 1% of the population globally. O-negative is also relatively rare but is the universal donor type, making it highly valuable for blood transfusions.
